River Yealm Boatwatch is supported by over thirty teams of volunteers who are committed to maintaining a safe and secure boating environment with a minimum level of marine crime, both on the water and along the shore. The focus is on high-visibility prevention and deterrence. Also, all boat users are encouraged to securely mark their high-value items of marine equipment with the latest DNA microdot coding system, and with high-visibility tamper resistant warning stickers. Prominent notice boards at launching sites clearly indicate that items are marked with DNA forensic chemical.

During the sailing season teams of Boatwatch volunteers can be seen wearing distinctive high-visibility yellow jackets. The Boatwatchers patrol the river by day and at night, both by water and on-shore.  Boatwatchers do not confront would-be criminals, but their high visibility and record of speedy communication with the police and other law enforcement agencies acts as a strong deterrence and has led to a consistent low level of marine crime

The River Yealm Boatwatch organisation is entirely supported by voluntary donations, which can be given to Boatwatchers on patrol, or to the Harbour-Master who has a collecting box in his office.
